Alan November (http://novemberlearning.com/) has done a great job of presenting podcasts series in such a way that a message is put across in manageable chunks. Teachers do not have a lot of down time on the job so to ask that they sit down and listen to an hour long audio file (with no pictures) is difficult.

November takes the same amount of information, but he presents it in two to four sittings instead of just one. When used for professional development, these podcasts are more easily digestible because they range between 10 and 20 minutes in length. There is less information in each and more time between the listener is expected to “pull” information, so teachers have time to think about what they have heard and talk to one another before they move on to the next portion of the learning.

Today, I would like to feature November’s interview series with Michael Wesch. In this series they talk about school’s practice of blocking internet based technologies instead of teaching the ethics of using those technologies. They discuss Skype and YouTube and the ways they are used inside and outside of the classroom. Wesch address teachers’ (and parents’) concerns that students trained on these technologies will lose out on “normal” social skills, forget about copyright, self-publish before editing, etc.

This particular series of podcasts is probably best suited to teachers and administrators in developed nations that readily have access to the internet.
